Martin was born in South Devon and educated King's College School and Trinity College, Cambridge.〔‘UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENCE’ The Standard (London, England), Saturday, April 26, 1862; pg. 3; Issue 11764〕 He was ordained by the Bishop of Oxford〔‘ECCLESIASTICAL INTELLIGENCE’ The Morning Post (London, England), Tuesday, June 05, 1855; pg. 5; Issue 25405〕 in 1855 and began his ecclesiastical career with curacies in Shirburn〔‘Church’ The Lancaster Gazette, and General Advertiser for Lancashire, Westmorland, Yorkshire, &c. (Lancaster, England), Saturday, September 13, 1856; pg. 3; Issue 3623〕 and Exeter. After this he was associaition secretary of the Church Missionary Society from 1862 to 1866 when he became Vicar of West Hartlepool.〔‘LOCAL AND GENERAL’.
